Experimental Games was our first large scale project made using Unreal 5 in first year. For it I created a “Floor is Lava” based platformer called Trial by Fire. Set in an erupting volcano, the player has to scale the obstacles around the rim of the caldera as the lava rises below them, placing the player on a strict timer. The game features a significant amount of movement mechanics, with the player given a double jump and directional dash to help them navigate the platforming obstacles.

This was my first major project in Unreal Engine 5 and is where I first made use of many different features, in particular the use of timelines for the timed movements of different obstacles and the chaos destruction system to create collapsible obstacles.
