The Synoptic Project module was the final and largest project I made during my university course. For it I designed “Star Colony”, a 4X strategy game focussed around building a colony on a distant alien planet. The gameplay loop centres around developing your colony by expanding its influence across the planet through new cities, mining outposts and infrastructure connecting it. All the while, the player shapes the colonies society through their choices when disasters occur, their decision affecting the politics and attitude of the colony as it develops into its own nation.

The player is able to freely choose their start location from anywhere across a fully custom made alien landscape, featuring a range of biomes and resources. Combining the choice of start location and the different political paths the player can steer their colony down, Star Colony is highly re-playable.

In this project, I was able to practice and learn about many of Unreal 5’s more complex systems, such as multi-layered blueprint inheritance, mouse-line traces and custom game modes.
